Tsunamis are deadly natural phenomena, often causing major damage to coastal areas. The public should be aware of warning signs, such as a reduction in water at the coast or a felt earthquake. If you feel an earthquake, immediately look for a higher place and far from the coast.

The impact of a tsunami is not only limited to physical damage. The long-term effects can result in a humanitarian crisis including loss of shelter, access to clean water, food and health services. Marine and coastal ecosystems are also badly damaged, causing loss of biodiversity.

Managing tsunami-related risks involves collaboration between governments, non-government organizations and local communities. Mitigation strategies include building earthquake-resistant infrastructure, public education, and directly facilitating rapid evacuation.

As part of preparations, tourists in tsunami-prone areas must know clear evacuation routes and safe places. Moving to higher ground should be a top priority as soon as a warning is issued.
