Intense city news coverage, celebrity gossip, classified ads, and a sports section round out the mix, with a focus on writing that is both provocative and clear. Founded in 1919 as the Illustrated Daily News by Joseph Medill Patterson, it was the first newspaper printed in tabloid format and at one time had the highest circulation of any daily newspaper in the United States. Its sensational coverage of crime and scandal drew readers, while lurid photographs and cartoons also contributed to its popularity.

From the 1940s through the 1960s, the newspaper espoused conservative populism. In the 1970s, it began shifting its stance to moderately liberal. The News has long been locked in a circulation battle with the even more sensational rival tabloid, The New York Post. The Daily News has often been characterized as the most important newspaper in New York City, although its circulation is far below its mid-20th century peak.

The newspaper was once headquartered at 220 East 42nd Street, an art deco building designed by John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood. The building was a model for the Daily Planet building in the first two Superman movies, and was later used as a set for television productions including the original episode of the CBS show “The Untouchables”. In 1995, the News moved to its current home at 450 West 33rd Street, which is also known as Manhattan West.
